Saint Francis Xavier Parish

Our Patron: Saint Francis Xavier

Saint Francis Xavier was born at the family castle in Xavier, Spain on April 7, 1506 to wealthy parents. His name is accurately written Francisco de Xavier because he is from the town of Xavier. At the age of 18 he attended the University of Paris. There he met Saint Ignatius of Loyola and became one of seven men who founded the Jesuit Order.

In 1541 Francis along with two Jesuits left Portugal and sailed for India. The Pope designated him as the Papal Nuncio to all the lands in the East. In India he converted thousands, particularly in Goa. He baptized several thousand souls in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, the Moluccas. In one month alone, he baptized 10,000 souls! He found his way to Japan and started a thriving church in Nagasaki which to this day are descendants of those first converts. His greatest aspiration was to convert China. In Indonesia he converted over 60,000 souls in his lifetime. Several miracles have been attributed to Saint Francis Xavier, most notably his bringing back a dead man to life.

On November 21, 1552, he fainted after celebrating mass. Several days later he died on the island of Shangzchwan, on December 3, never to have reached China as he planned. His body was buried on the beach. One year later it was re-opened was found to be preserved intact. It was reburied in Malacca. One year later it was finally reburied in Goa Cathedral, but the body was still fresh. It was then sealed in a glass and silver casket. The right arm was removed and taken to Rome. To this day, the body of Francis Xavier has not decayed. Miracle!

In Goa, India, the glass coffin of Saint Francis Xavier is venerated. It was proven to be un-embalmed. Scientists are amazed and cannot explain it. It is a miracle. Francis Xavier was beatified on October 25, 1619 by Pope Paul V and was canonized as saint on March 12, 1622 by Pope Gregory XV. He is considered to be the greatest missionary since Saint Paul. He is the patron of missionaries. He is symbolized by: crucifix, baptismal shell, staff, bell, flaming heart. The ceiling of Nasugbu's  main altar is a reflection of the baptismal shell carried by Saint Francis as he baptized thousands of souls. The baptismal shell-motiff of the arches on the altar is a reminder of Christ's commision to baptize all nations in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. His feast day is December 3, the day he entered into heaven after his death. In immitation of Saint Francis Xavier's Pamplona heritage, the Fiesta de Torros in Nasugbu is held much to the delight of the townfolk.

Saint Francis Xavier was a great  missionary. His efforts left a significant impression in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Japan and China. His work is fundamental in the propagation of Christianity in Asia. Although he is Catholic, Saint Francis is honored by Protestant Lutherans and Anglicans in their churches as well. His motto was "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam!"...for the greater glory of God!

Saint Francis Xavier,          beloved patron of Nasugbu,     glory of missionaries,                pray for us. Amen.

Matthew 29:19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of time.

Prayer in Honor of St. Francis Xavier

O Holy Saint Francis Xavier, well beloved and full of charity, with thee I reverently adore the Divine Majesty; and since I especially rejoice in the singular gifts of grace bestowed on thee in life, and of glory after death, I give thanks to God, and beg of thee, with all the affection of my heart, that by thy powerful intercession thou mayest obtain for me, above all things, the grace to live a holy life and die a holy death. Moreover, I beg of thee to obtain for me (request your favor); but if what I ask does not tend to the glory of God and the greater good of my soul, do thou, I beseech thee, obtain for me what will more certainly attain these ends. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be...

Indulgence of 300 days (ROME)
